Instead of choosing a jpg file for a desktop groundwork, you can as well select a PDF file to use every bit desktop background.
This is particularly absurd when y'all want to see precipitous text. And near of the times a PDF file is smaller than a JPG.

Not quite.
Beingness an artist whose favorite graphics program is Illustrator, 1 of the first things I tried upon installing X was to use an Illustrator 9 file as a properties - upwardly to 8, Illustrator's native format was EPS, with 9 it changed to PDF, which is really just EPS with a new proper name and a few tweaks anyhow.
All the same...
information technology didn't really piece of work. Fifty-fifty going back to Illustrator and using the save as PDF option resulted in an image that was screwy.
This was a fairly complicated file, I admit - gradient mesh, funky blends, lots of subtle transparancy. I haven't re-tried this experiment with newer versions of X. At present that I think about it, perhaps I should see if this is something that'southward been improved in 10.0.3...
Not quite.
Nope, I just did some semi-exhaustive testing (Illustrator 9-generated native .AI, ,PDF, and .EPS) and it even so just completely failed to render properly...
Your mileage may vary, Of course, in normal use, you lot'd probably desire to render the image to a bitmap anyway, for faster boot-ups.
While I'm on the subject, am I the merely person who's annoyed at the fact that at that place are no options for how your backdrop is displayed? No centering on a groundwork of some chosen color, just tiling.

How do you get a PDF file to be the right size and shape to use as a desktop movie? I tried opening a JPG and "printing" it to a PDF file, simply that created a page-shaped physician that was white at the height and had the picture at the bottom.
